What Is Deionised Water And What Is It Used For?
At The Distilled Water Company, we supply customers across the UK with high-quality purified water products. Not only do we ensure that our distilled and deionised water is some of the best available on the market, we also take great care when it comes to meeting our customers’ needs and requirements.
What Is Deionised Water?
Deionised water is exactly what it sounds like, it’s water that has had all of its ions removed. Tap water generally is full of ions that come from the soil, the pipes they travel through or other sources. The process of removing these ions is called an ion exchange process. Deionised water is also called demineralised water.
For those who do not know, ions are electrically charged atoms or molecules that have either a negative or positive charge. For many applications that use water to rinse or as an ingredient, ions found in normal water are considered as impurities and must be removed from the water.
What Is Ion Exchange
Ion exchange is the process through which deionised water and demineralised water is created. Resin beds are compiled of small plastic beads that are made of organic polymer chains with positive and negative charges. Water that is put through a resin bed and goes through ion exchange resulting in deionised water.
