Use Distilled Water For Your Scale Locomotives
At The Distilled Water Company, we love hearing feedback from our clients. When we heard what one of our clients used distilled water for we just couldn’t help but share his story:
“I belong to the Gauge 1 Model Railway Association, which has around 1700 members in the UK and 2500 including the rest of the world.
The locomotives are steam powered and are fired by methylated spirits, coal or butane gas with methylated spirits being the most popular. The most common source of water for the boiler is filtered rainwater, because there is no cost, with a few members using a small distilling unit at home. My self and three friends buy in bulk from your company.
The locos are fitted with a regulator to control speed, a gauge to check boiler water level, a pressure gauge to check boiler pressure, a steam blower to maintain pressure when the engine is stationery, a bypass valve to fill the boiler via an axle pump from water in the tender when the engine is running. The boiler pressure is controlled by safety valves which are usually set to lift at 60 psi. Some engines also have cylinder drain cocks to dispel condensate from the cylinders at the start of a run. They are generally manually controlled as the engine is running, but some are fitted with radio control.”
Well you learn something new every day! We loved hearing about this use of distilled water.
