The Difference Between Reverse Osmosis And Distilled Water

The Difference Between Reverse Osmosis And Distilled Water

Have you ever wondered what the difference between reverse osmosis and distilled water is? The Distilled Water Company are here to clear it up for you. Find out all you need to know in our article below.

What is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is essentially a series of filters that water is pushed through under pressure. Reverse osmosis systems use a semi-permeable membrane.

In order to understand reverse osmosis, you need to understand the basics of osmosis. Osmosis occurs when you have two pools of water, which are connected by a semi-permeable membrane that allows water through. Water then finds a balance between the two pools.

Reverse osmosis adds pressure to the water allowing it to separate the purified water from the contaminated water.

 Negatives Of Using Reverse Osmosis

  • Filters do wear down and will need to be replaced over time, making it an expensive endeavour.
  • There can be a lot of wastewater.
  • Bacteria can build up on the contaminated side and eventually slip through the semi-permeable membrane and into the purified water.

What is Distillation

Distillation is a process of heating up water. The water then turns into purified steam, leaving contaminants behind. Once it has cooled, it condenses and turns back into a liquid. Unlike reverse osmosis, the process of distillation removes water from the contaminants, rather than removing the contaminants from the water.

Distillation is a more reliable process of water filtration as it boils the water killing the unwanted contaminants and compounds. Distillation is also consistent and unlike reverse osmosis will not lose effectiveness over time.

To conclude, when it comes to filtering water, the process of distillation is far more reliable, effective and cost-efficient.
