Distilled Water In Schools
In any science experiment, a fair test has only one variable and all other aspects are kept constant, these aspects are known as ‘controls’.
It has been proven that distilled water is the best control for science projects as it is purified and will not hinder or change any part of the experiment.
Tap water and bottled water contain many different minerals and these minerals may change the outcome of the experiment, which may even be harmful to students and teachers.
Here are a few interesting physics and facts of water
- Hot water actually freezes faster than cold water when exposed to the same subzero surroundings according to the Mpemba effect.
- The slipperiness of ice is still being debated today. Scientists believe that it is because of the moving layer of water on top of the ice. Being dubbed “the inherent motion of the surface molecules”
- When a drop of water lands on a surface much hotter than its boiling point, it can “run across the surface for much longer than you’d expect. You would think that a drop of water would merely evaporate into thin air but according to the Leidenfrost effect.
- In subzero surroundings (-30 degrees celcius), when a pot of boiling water is poured out into the air, it will instantly turn to snow and blow away. This is caused by the extreme temperature difference. The cold air is so dense that there is no room left to carry water vapor – let alone hot water vapor.
Distilled water is purified of minerals whereas tap and bottled water contain many different minerals that may alter the results of experiments.
