Who would have thought that there are so many types of water available on the market? It can be quite confusing indeed. What is in the water, what isn’t and seriously… what’s the difference between distilled water, spring water and purified?

We are going to try to keep this as simple as possible to avoid further confusion. 

Alright, here we go:

Purified Water

Ever heard of purified water? We mean purified not filtered water. This type of water has gone through a process to remove any impurities, contaminants and minerals you may find in drinking water.

Types of purification include distillation, demineralisation/deionisation, reverse osmosis and mechanical filtration. Water that has gone through a purification system generally leaves you with a contaminant or mineral free form of pure water.

Now Moving onto Distilled Water

Distilled water is a type of water that has gone through a process of distillation that strips it of any contaminants and minerals. Distilled is a type of purified water. This type of water is used in many industries due to it being purified including the cosmetic, mechanical and medical sectors to mention a few.

This type of water is not recommended for human consumption like all purified types of water as it contains no minerals that are needed by the body.

Finally, Spring Water

As we mentioned purified water is not recommended for human consumption and is not something you want to drink. Drinking water as its name suggests is intended for the purpose of consumption and comes from your mains water supply or can be found in bottles in your convenience store.

Onto spring water…

You will often find this in bottled form and is sourced from an underground spring. Spring water is naturally filtered by any rock (most common being limestone) which contributes to its unique flavour and refreshing taste. All bottled spring water is required to be tested and filtered for any sediment.

Well, you should have more of a basic understanding of the different types of water available on the market. There are other types including demineralised or deionised water, but we don’t want to start confusing you now.
