Demineralised Water Explained

Demineralised Water Explained

As you might guess by the name, demineralised water (also referred to as deionised water) is almost completely free of minerals such as magnesium, calcium and a long list of other naturally occurring dissolved minerals. Demineralised water is generally defined as having between 1-10 mg/L (ppm) of total dissolved solids.

Why would consuming demineralised water have a negative effect on our health?

The World Health Organisation breaks up the answer into 5 categories: • Direct effects on the intestinal mucous membrane, metabolism and mineral homoeostasis or other body functions. • Little or no intake of calcium and magnesium from low-mineral water. • Low intake of other essential elements and microelements. • Loss of calcium, magnesium and other essential elements in prepared food. • Possible increased dietary intake of toxic metals.

Arguments against drinking demineralised water

Some would argue that the lack minerals are harmful to the human body – if consumed regularly. Long-term consumption of the water is deemed to be unsafe yet it cleanses the body of excess calcium, magnesium and potassium we received from foods which could result in an increased risk of diseases, loss of bone density and cavities. Due to that, demineralised water is not recommended for consumption and, it simply tastes bad.

Arguments in favour of drinking demineralised water

Those who support demineralised or deionised water for drinking purposes admit that there is a lack of minerals in this water form but causes no harm to the human body. The lack of micro and macro elements are consumed through our daily intake of food which would make up for the lack thereof in demineralised water.
